1. What is camping?
Camping is an outdoor recreational activity, in which the campers get away from civilization and enjoy nature while spending one or more nights at a campsite. They may use a tent, a primitive structure, or no shelter at all. Camping as a recreational activity became popular in the early 20th century. Campers frequent national parks, other publicly owned natural areas, and privately owned campgrounds. Camping is fun, and easy. Common sense and a little knowledge will get you started. The rest is up to you. Do your homework, be prepared, and enjoy the great outdoors.
2. How to choose a perfect campsite?
Consider several things when choosing your campsite.
• Choose a level and shaded site.
• The site should have good drainage in case of wet weather.
• The restroom and bathing facilities are within a reasonable distance.
• A water supply is nearby.
• Where do you dispose of garbage.
• How close to the recreational facilities--pool, playground, store etc.
• Consider the layout.
a. Is the site large enough to meet your needs?
b.Where will you put your tent(s)?
c.What area will you use for meal preparation and cooking & what about your picnic table?
d.How about your campfire and wood piles?
e.Is there an area for activities?
f.Where do you park your car?
3. How do you choose a camping sleeping bag and mat?
Making a bed at the campground is easy. A sleeping mat or air mattress is often placed underneath the sleeping bag for cushioning from stones and twigs as well as for insulation from the ground. First you need to have some type of padding to cushion you from the hard ground. There are inflatable mats and various closed-cell mats that work quite well. On top of the mat you'll place your sleeping bag.
If you are camping in warm weather you will only need a basic sleeping bag, a lightweight rectangular sleeping bag will do. But if you will be winter camping, you’ll need some of the more advanced features.
4. How much should I pay for a tent?
In general, the higher priced tents are made with stronger fabric, stronger poles, and stronger stitching. They will withstand higher winds and heavier rain. They will last longer. A good tent can last for many years. However, not everyone needs this strength and durability. The milder and drier the climate, and the closer to home you camp, the more likely that a less expensive tent will be a very good bargain for you.
If you are just starting out in your family camping adventures, and don't know if you will really like camping, then you might want to stick with the least expensive tents. Many families do. It is very likely that you will try your first trips when the weather is warm and dry, and will probably keep close to civilization until you gain some experience and decide whether you like camping or not. You can always upgrade to a better tent later, and keep your original budget tent for when conditions allow.
5. My tent gets muddy inside and out. How do I keep it clean?
Put a plastic tarp on the ground under the tent. It should match the "footprint" of the tent so that it doesn't gather rainwater. This groundsheet protects the floor of your tent from stones, sticks, and general wear and tear. Keep a whiskbroom in the tent for sweeping out dirt and leaves. Use an old towel or small piece of carpet as a door matt for wiping off feet before entering the tent. Remove your shoes before entering the tent. This helps keep the tent floor and sleeping bags clean.
6. Is it safe?
Any outdoor activity has the element of danger. Done properly stealth camping is as safe as any other type of camping. If you are not trespassing you have nothing to fear from landowners, but if you are doing it properly they wouldn't know anyway.
7. How big of a tent do I need?
That depends on whether you're a backpacker trying to conserve pack weight, or you're a family camper needing extra room for your kids.
